Landing

These stairs are worn. These walls are crumbling.

There's enough hooks for every little thing you need to keep close to you. There's enough room to sit and pull on your boots without being in the way.

Here, at the bottom of the landing, is where you begin.

Scraps

That thing you make with the leftover scraps comes together quickly.

No need to rummage or chop or measure.

Heliotrope

Every other day I seem to declare my love for a new favourite flower. Today it's heliotrope.

I'm told that the variety growing in our garden is as old as dirt.

I come from a long line of women who invite friends over for tea and then hand them a packet of heirloom seeds or bulbs or cuttings at the end of the visit. It's another way of saying I will not forget you.

In bloom forever

When you open the jar, the air fills with flowers. And with earth, too.
